Paintings of the Midwest Art Exhibit
This exhibit will highlight 8 Indigenous Midwest tribes from Missouri and Illinois: Osage, Iowa, Cheyenne, Oto, Illini, Missouri, Quapaw and Chickasaw paired with authentic artifacts specific to their tribes.
If you were raised around these parts we all have that treasured shoe box with flint shards, broken pottery and arrowheads and if you were really lucky you may have found a tomahawk or a grinding stone.
With over 100 pieces of art paired with authentic Native American artifacts this original exhibit will bring those otherwise inanimate objects to life.
• We will have a beautiful Cheyenne maiden dress,
• an exquisite bronze sculpture by Fredric Remington called Savage.
• Pottery from the Mississippian Period
• Did you know that the game of Lacrosse came from a Native American game of stick and ball?
The SEMO Explorer will also be on site Friday, Saturday and Sunday outfitted with its Native American exhibit as well.
This exhibit for me as the curator has been awe-inspiring. I have been researching for this exhibit since our last fine art show a year ago. There are so many pieces to the exhibit whether you are talking history, art, culture or artists. The artifacts range from textiles, silver trade and weapons to pottery, beadwork and piece medals.
Perryville is very fortunate to have this opportunity. It is an original exhibit with never before pieces of art being publicly displayed. We want to celebrate the essence of our Midwest Native American people and share a tiny bit of their history with those who live here now.
